FIRST AND SECOND GRADE

1st Annual Gobblefest
As we enter Thanksgiving week and all the traditions we look forward to, we also think of the many things that are different this year due to COVID. St. Peter was not able to hold the beloved traditional 1st and 2nd grade Feast this year, but that didn’t stop our 1st and 2nd graders from celebrating and having a great time! This week St. Peter held its first Gobble Fest! Mrs. Drake, Mrs. Smiegowski, and Mrs. Schutz pulled out all the stops to give their students an exceptional experience to engage them in the Thanksgiving spirit.

Gobble Fest consisted of 4 stations for the kids to rotate through. Each class came down to the Life Center and had an hour to move around and enjoy the different activities in small groups of 5 or 6 students.

The game station included a Pilgrim game of Naughts and Crosses (also known as tic tac toe). There was also a “toss and catch” game. This game consisted of a ring made out of a pipe cleaner tied to a string, which was tied to a stick, or in this case, a skewer. The kids tried to swing the loop out and catch it on the end of the stick. The children of the Wampanoag tribe played this game to build hand-eye coordination skills for hunting. There were a few kids along the way who made it look easy!

At the craft station, the kids made a turkey centerpiece out of paper plates and cups. On the back of the craft, they included 1 Chronicles 16:34, which is the verse the 2nd graders say each day as their lunchtime prayer. “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His love endures forever.” The students can share this verse at home with their families and loved ones while displaying their creation.

At the story station, there was an object lesson about the first Thanksgiving when the pilgrims came to North America looking for the freedom to worship freely. The students learned of the hardships that accompanied that long journey and received small tangible objects to represent different story pieces as they listened.

It wouldn’t be a Thanksgiving celebration without pumpkin pie – or in this case, pumpkin mousse! The kids got to enjoy a special dessert as part of Gobble Fest. You can’t go wrong with pumpkin, vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and graham cracker crumbs!

The 1st and 2nd graders had so much fun at Gobble Fest this year. Our teachers did a fantastic job of giving them a Thanksgiving celebration and making some wonderful memories.
