MIDDLE SCHOOLERS FIX UP THE LIBRARY
Summer at St. Peter is a time for refreshing and renovating our spaces. This past summer, part of those renovations happened in our middle school wing and our library. During the updates to the library, the books had to be moved out. In the process, they were not kept in alphabetical or numerical order. When they were returned to the library, all the books needed to be re-shelved correctly, and it was a challenge that the middle schoolers met with enthusiasm.
The students can come in whenever they have extra time. Some come for a few minutes during homeroom in the morning; some come for a little longer in the afternoon during study hall. Some even come in after school. The students have been able to look at the piles of books and devise ways, with the guidance of Mrs. Picchiotti, to organize them and prepare to re-shelve them. They make sure the fiction books are alphabetized by the author’s last name and that the non-fiction books are shelved according to the Dewey decimal system. They are so dedicated to getting the library back into working order. They are excited to see the books again, especially after spending so much time on iPads. They are making fantastic progress, and the library should be ready for the next step in about a week.
After the books are organized and re-shelved, Mrs. Picchiotti will use volunteers to come in and scan the ISBN codes on the backs of the books into an app. This process will create a catalog listing of each of the books. It will allow the students to search by genre or author, check books in and out, and explore the library’s availability. Once the project is done, the library will be open to our K – 8 students again.
The middle schoolers have made such an effort as they work together to bring the library back to being a valuable resource for our students. It is exciting to watch the students work together towards a common goal to benefit our St. Peter community!!
