VETERANS DAY
On November 11, we honor the wartime service and sacrifice of men and women in the armed forces. Originally proclaimed Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to include American veterans of all wars. As our country celebrated Veterans Day this week, St. Peter students also came together to honor our nation’s servicemen and women. Our 8th and 1st-grade classes, led by mother-daughter teachers Mrs. Nagle and Mrs. Rogers, combined on Thursday to celebrate and learn more about our veterans together.
The 1st graders made a Veterans Day book with the assistance of the 8th-grade students. The 8th graders helped the younger students cut, glue, and assemble the books. Once the students completed the books, the older kids helped the 1st graders read them and answer some of the included questions.
The books had several sections, including coloring pictures, Veterans Day vocabulary, explanations of the branches of the military, and a history of Veterans Day. The students wrote what it means to them to be brave. A few answers included not being scared, being a leader, and believing that God is with you no matter what. A section allowed the kids to write how they think they can be a hero. One student wrote, “by standing up for others.” Others wrote “by being kind,” “by choosing what is right,” and “by being a good friend.” The 1st graders are already very wise about bravery and what it takes to be a hero!
The 8th graders shared a favorite middle school game with the 1st graders to close out their time together. They played a Veterans Day Kahoot game. Kahoot is an education-based quiz game played on the Smartboard using iPads. The kids enjoyed playing the game together and competing against each other.
Together our 8th graders and 1st graders remembered our veterans, learning more about what they do and why they deserve to be honored and celebrated each year. Watching our oldest and younger students come together this way is such a fun way that the St. Peter school community connects together and builds relationships; our oldest students have the opportunity to lead and set examples for the younger students. Start here, lead anywhere!!
