5th grade Book Reveal
Reading is not only a skill that is crucial for students to have but an activity that can lead to discovering fantastical new worlds. However, some students have trouble getting excited about reading. That is why it's so important for teachers to encourage reading and help students find the fun in it. This past Friday, our 5th-grade reading teachers pulled out all the stops to create excitement for their next "Book Club" book.
Every 4-5 weeks, St. Peter's 5th graders read a Book Club selection that culminates in a project at the end. The most recent Book Club activity was based on an independent reading project, so the students could read the book of their choosing and then complete a project based on the book's main character. In this case, the project was to decorate a pumpkin to look like this character. There are some talented kids in our 5th-grade class!
To help the students get excited for the newest book, Mrs. Hiller, Mrs. Ryg, and Mrs. Bukala planned a Book Reveal. Coupled with some skill development about inferring facts by taking clues from what is around you, the teachers had clues planted around the room, provided a fun, themed snack for the kids, along with balloons and other decorations. Mrs. Hiller shared that this book was her childhood "Hook Book" - a book that started her journey as a reader. She shared some clue words with the students like “adventure”, “survivor”, and “female heroine” which had the kids guessing. All the excitement built up to the big book reveal, which was "Island of the Blue Dolphins".
Between clues like plush dolphins and wolves, Swedish Fish candies, colored balloons, and clue words, the students were enthusiastic and enjoyed trying to infer their next book's title. The teachers did a great job building excitement and bringing fun to reading!
